St Helen's North Thoresby

St Helens - Click for information about the buildingSt Helen's Church is the home of a worshipping community of all ages. There are services every Sunday at 10 a.m. and most Thursdays at 9.30 a.m. You are welcome to visit St Helen's at any time. It's open all daylight hours throughout the year.

The picture at the top of the page is the work of William Toyne who was the headmaster of the village school in the middle of the last century. He produced a number of depictions of St Helen's. This one was a lino cut based on a much more detailed pen and ink sketch. He also wrote a "Miscellany" of historical titbits about the church and village and with his pupils produced a charming history of the church, some copies of which survive from the 1950's. We are grateful to his son and daughters for allowing us to use his work as our logo.

The building is a delightful mish-mash of architectural styles and has benefited from centuries of having been messed around with! At one time it was much larger than at present, but even in the sixteenth century money mattered and when the south aisle became uneconomical to maintain or repair, they knocked it down! We have a suspicion that a few local pig sties and outhouses were built from the proceeds! For the church hunter it's got everything: ancient bells, Tudor bench ends, some old glass, three unusual modern windows, a fascinating organ, a Saxon grave stone and even a shepherd's crook!

Special News

In the last few years we have been given two new benches for the churchyard which have made it a pleasant place to sit. Also, one of our parishioners, Sid Dunham, has spent a huge amount of time and energy clearing undergrowth and rubbish from the churchyard. The whole place is now a delight to behold.

Over the years a fair number of grave stones have fallen over or are leaning at an alarming angle. During the Summer Helen Pidgen sold a huge number of flowers and raised enough money to have almost thirty of these stones straightened. The result is to make the area round the church look a great deal tidier.
