The first thing you notice when you go into St Mary's is that its full up with
information and pictures of what the people here get up to. There's a lot of
explanation about what various things mean. Lots of details and things of
interest are pointed out to you. We're very keen on welcoming everyone to St
Mary's. Not just the worshipper on a Sunday but the tourist, the casual visitor
or the person who just wants to come and sit quietly for a moment.
We also do as much as we can to make the churchyard a haven not only for
those who come to remember their loved ones, but also for wildlife and for
people who appreciate the beauty of an unspoiled and peaceful space.
Worship
Some years ago the people at St Mary’s decided that it was daft for half a
dozen of us to sit in church feeling glum while half a dozen Methodists sat in
the chapel also feeling glum.
So we decided to have all our services together. There’s nothing formal about
this arrangement but it has the tacit blessing of the hierarchies of both
churches and so far we’re feeling a lot happier. There still aren’t very many of
us. One of the characteristics of the church in Marshchapel is that dozens of
people are devoted to the churches and do all sorts of work for us, but on the
whole they don’t come to services - not apart from Harvest and Christmas anyway.
But that’s the situation we have and we are happy to work with it.
We have services at St Mary’s on the first and third Sundays in the month and at
the Methodist church on the second and fourth Sundays. The general pattern is
outlined here.
